Fear X, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, focuses on Harry Caine (played by John Turturro), a security guard at a Wisconsin mall whose wife is shot dead one day in the parking lot of the mall for no apparent reason. Caine then becomes so obsessed with finding out why she was shot that his work suffers. At first suspected of arranging a hit on his wife, Caine struggles to find clues. After seeing a vision of his dead wife in the empty house across the street, he finds photographs that prompt him to track down the culprit within a small town in Montana. Police officer Peter Northrop (played by James Remar) evidently was pursuing a crooked cop at the time, shot at the man, Caine’s wife died in the crossfire, and Northrop moved to Montana out of guilt for the accidental homicide. Inevitably, Caine meets Northrop, but the suspenseful film slows down to snailpace and becomes surreal. The title remains a mystery. MH
